The original recipe of the fish balls contained, of course… fish. Which is obviously not included in a vegan healthy diet. So I kind of gave up the dish, and with time I totally forgot about it. Until… I happened to see a vegan blog that featured an Israeli chef who made this great dish… completely vegan!

Now, a word about Israel: forget everything you know about this country. So many of us think of Israel as a war area. The truth is that Israel has the biggest percentage of vegan people (to its size, which is about 6 or 7 million all together – jews and arabs). And – listen to that – they are not vegan out of health reasons! oh no. They are vegan (OK – not all. maybe just 95% of them…) out of compassion reasons!! Every couple of months there is a huge demonstration for animal rights, and last week they had the biggest vegan festival in the whole world!

So if a good Israeli chef is publishing a recipe for vegan fish balls that contain zero fish in it, I had to try it out. And survived to tell!

So here is the recipe for vegan fish balls (about 4 people would eat it if they are not so hungry. When really hungry I could eat the whole thing… joking!)

What you need:

For the balls:


* 300 gram grounded firm tofu (organic only – non GMO). You blend it in a blender until smooth.
* 3 spoons bread crumbs or 3 slices of bread that are washed with water and are hand-chopped.
* 1 pack well chopped coriander.
* 1 small purple onion, chopped very well.
* 1 chopped garlic clove.
* 4 spoons olive oil.
* 1 tbs grounded cumin.
* 1 tbs paprika.
* Salt to taste.


For the sauce:

* 1/4 Avocado oil.
* 10 chopped garlic cloves.
* 1 red pepper, sliced.
* 1 thinly sliced carrot.
* 1 pack well chopped coriander.
* Optional: 1 -2 tbs hot paprika or chilly seeds (if you like it hot, baby!!)
* 6 Ripe tomatoes, chopped to quarters
* 2 spoons paprika
* 1 Spoon grounded cumin
* 1 tbs maple syrup, organic honey or brown sugar
* Salt to taste
* About 2 cups of filtered water.


What to do:

* Heat the oven to about 300 degrees.
* Prepare the balls: blend all the balls ingredients in a big bowl and mix them. Make a nice little balls and lay the balls on a oily baking dish. Drop couple of olive oil drops on top. Put in the oven for about 20 minutes.
* Prepare the sauce: Warm the oil and then fry all the sauce ingredients (expect the tomatoes and the spices) in a wide pan for about 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes and spices and cook for another 5 minutes.
* Now it’s time to add water: be careful with it. You have to have enough water to create a nice sauce for the balls, but you don’t want to get a whole soup! So start with little bit water and then add as much as you need, slowly but surely.
* Add the balls to the sauce and continue cooking them together for another 15 minutes.

You may serve with some chopped coriander on top, for garnish.
